Montevideo has a plethora of hotels to stay in, whether in Montevideo, the “new” town or in the old city around Sarandí street which is where you’ll find all curiosities and reference points for the city. Also the Four Points Sheraton in the south of the city conveniently situated to catch all the fun on carnival in February!
The great pull of Uruguay though is its hinterland, the great open spaces are lush, beautiful and accessible, and some places are only accessible on horseback, which brings us to the Estancia Cabaña La Paz in Paysandú province. The estancia (ranch) sits in its own grounds near to Colonia La Paz, main town of the province. The rooms are rustic (good) more than luxurious, yet clean and fully appointed as a refuge after a day on horseback or trekking into the hinterland or after a hard day’s wine tasting or asado (barbecue) preparation.
Globe at One has just done a reconnaissance of Uruguay and has discovered the Famila Deicas winery in Cannelones province near to the charming town of Juanicó where you are able to stay in the extensive grounds, taste aged wine produced from the Tannat grape and greatest of all wander around talking to the fantastic staff and wonderful townspeople. This can be arranged as part of a wine tour of the region as some people at Globe at One like nothing better than imbibe vino very often!
