Singapore Singapore

Singapore offers a gentle entree into hectic Indochina. You’ll recognise Western infrastructure but the satays, and a green lung offered by the Bukit Timah nature reserve buttresses this so-called Asian tiger

It’s true, Singapore doesn’t have Angkor or Burobadur, but this is a fun, funky and easy place to shop and take in the faded atmosphere of the last days of smoking jackets and Noel Coward-esque drama at the Raffles hotel, or indeed the Victoria Theatre (still there)!!

Singapore is an old British colonial dream wrapped around a very modern city, the Padang for instance contains a cricket pavilion (The Singapore Cricket Club) rivalled only by the Borda in Guyana and Lords in London for elegance

The Raffles hotel is a place of legendary opulence and indeed was patronised by said Coward in the 1930’s, it is one of the most famous hotels in the world and a Singapore sling is still worth popping in there for.

Orchard Road is a byword for retail therapy of all kinds and is a shopping hub not to mention an air conditioned oasis!
