December

Where to head during December when visiting Latin America or South East Asia

December trends for South East Asia

I know I know but mentioning the Khao San Road in Bangkok isn’t politically correct but for yours truly the city is the gateway to the whole region in many respects and come December the south west monsoon rains have abated and the wandering around the city and planning the next leg of any journey is made more pleasant in that respect. That road by the way is a tropical Camden Town useful perhaps for getting supplies and knick-knacks for the journey ahead but always fun in moderation.

Phuket and Koh Samui are the main draws for Thailand which at this time of year aren’t drenched in rain and since my last visit to Thailand there have been moves to take the decadent edges off these islands, parts of Bangkok and Pattaya where I suspect after the Covid restrictions will be looking to re-invent themselves.

Anywhere in the region is good weather-wise to head to at this time of year; obviously places like Hong Kong and Singapore harbour a Christmas tradition as well as celebrations in most of the large capital cities in the region.

December trends for Latin America

This month ushers in summer in full force for all of South America and expect tropical weather right down to Patagonia if not down to the southern tip of the continent which stays cool all year round.

Rio welcomes in the New Year in spectacular fashion matching New York and London for iconic settings and unrivalled atmosphere.

The Christmas celebrations are enthusiastically embraced everywhere with baroque colonial Spanish and Portuguese churches always open and with locals savouring the ability to celebrate in high summer which we obviously can’t do in Blighty!

This is the time of the year to be traversing the River Plate by boat from Montevideo to Buenos Aires or vice versa or indeed to visit Colonia del Sacramento, the most picturesque of Uruguayan towns replete with cobbled streets, old town walls, vintage cars and an old world feel recalling the Portuguese colonial presence, definitely a delightful place to be spending 2 or 3 days relaxing by the Río de la Plata.
