September

Where to head during August when visiting Latin America or South East Asia

September trends for Latin America

Paraguay had a president called Stroessner, him having Bavarian heritage hits at a resident German community in the country that does celebrate Oktoberfest which actually starts in late September and takes place within the premises of a major brewer in Asunción, the capital city. German immigration occurred at the same time as immigration into Southern Brazil when religious freedom was denied back in Germany at the time. Arriving in late September also avoids the higher temperatures later on in the summer as this is their springtime.

At the same time in Peru, the Mistura festival based mainly in Lima but spread over other cites too exposes gastronomic variety that occurs in in this Andean nation.

Be aware of the 3 main regions contributing to this foodie diversity being

  1. The coast and of course the sea
  2. The mountainous Andes
  3. The Amazon rainforest

Not only were ingredients donated by Africans, Europeans and the Indigenous peoples but you can imagine the fruits of the sea, exotic fruits originating from the jungles of the interior and the centuries old corn based cuisine encountered by the Spanish during the 15th century.

Nusa Tenggara are a chain of islands stretching out from Bali’s east coast extending to Timor in the east and houses Komodo island where you know it the dragons live. The fierce heat has subsided somewhat and the rains have also contributed to a less heated environment with less tourists and better deals available.

The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is in the east of Sabah state in Malaysia and as the name suggests it helps to preserve the Orang-utan primate populations of north Borneo to which it is indigenous

This Sporting Life…

Globe at One usually directs sports tours towards South America for obvious reasons but an alternative attraction that beckons in Thailand is Muay Thai which is Thai Boxing which is so popular that Premiership football takes 2nd place in many people’s affections with stadia erected in all main towns for bouts to commence most weekends. The Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok hosts the most prestigious bouts and if you want another conduit into Thai culture then there would be as good as anywhere else to test the waters.
