November

Where to head during November when visiting Latin America or South East Asia

November trends for South East Asia

The Bon Om Touk is to Cambodia what the Henley Regatta is to England and is meant to mark the end of the monsoon season when the flow of the Tonlé Sap river reverses. This is also known as a moon festival but don’t think of those hippy-driven get-togethers perhaps at Sihanoukville in the southern coast, these are 3 days of pageantry, costume, music and dance some of which occurs on the boats themselves!

With winter taking its grip on the northern hemisphere, heading to this region is appealing and in November the rains ease off from the southern region of the country which is tropical and Ho Chi Minh City in particular. Saigon as it was called before 1976 was synonymous with war with the Americans in particular but for yours truly the city is a gastronomic frontier with some of the best street food in the world.

Adjacent to the city’s region lies the Mekong Delta where a series of channels of the said river empties into the South China Sea and criss-crossed with small boats gliding gracefully along providing the prime transport link between many villages. This is a place where the balance between water and land is always up for negotiation. CanTho, the largest city on the delta is a good base to explore and just hang out with easy access from HCMC

In Laos the That Luang festival is centred around the Pha That Luang stupa in the centre of Vientiane which was established in the 3rd century and has become a central symbol of Laos and as a consequence the most revered festival taking place in the country taking place in 2021 on the 18th of November and next year on the 8th.

November trends for Latin America

Mexico’s Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead at the beginning of the month really is a sobering and at the same time uplifting aspect of Mexican culture and in light of the recent past is an approach to the dearly departed that bestows dignity on the reverence of the dearly departed. But this doesn’t harbour the sombre ambiance that we generally have in Britain and although it’s not meant to be a tourist draw as such being in the country at this time is a real treat in witnessing people paying homage to their late relatives.
