Where to head during October when visiting Latin America or South East Asia

October trends for Latin America

Latin America is so vast that in this month autumn starts to lick the heels of Mexico where the Festival Internacional Cervantino commences and spring is in full stride in places like Argentina and Uruguay.

Uruguay’s temperatures revert back to Mediterranean after being temperate for 4 months and this is an excellent time to visit. The Fray Bentos museum hints at a liking for beef in the diet there, vegetarians are catered for but if you do eat meat then here will be one of the best places on the planet where they will actually know how to prepare it properly, this is usually served with generous helpings of local red wine which is an overlooked aspect of a country which shares a common climate type with France and Italy.

My recommendations are the Tannat grape based reds which will complement the above mentioned meals, also note that Bolivia also produce their own version of the tipple originating from some of the highest vineyards in the world which you can of course visit with a little help from Globe at One.

October  trends for South East Asia

The MassKara Festival held in Bacolod on Negros island takes place during the 2nd week of the month and is a celebration in the face of a shipping tragedy that took place in 1980 and looks to instil a sense of optimism for local people and a positivity that now attracts many visitors from abroad to a get-together that resembles the pre-Lenten affairs that take place in Latin America with the same vibe and similar music accompaniment.

The northern section of Vietnam becomes dry and warm and the best environment in order to visit  Lào Cai province in the north-west of the country,. As it is elevated territory the temperatures are temperate and very European like which means jumpers and an overcoat. Here is a region lying between Hanoi and the Chinese border lived in by various ethnic minorities the best know being the Hmong.

The weekends can be quite busy especially around the markets that cater for day-trippers but staying overnight in the villages around Sa-Pa provides a more insightful look and feel for local people.

Walking and hiking is encouraged and visiting the surrounding area is a feast for the eyes as well as a culinary expedition too.
