March

Where to head during March when visiting Latin America or South East Asia

March trends for Asia

Nyepi is the Hindu new year not only celebrated in India but also on Bali, Indonesia, come 2022 it will fall on the 3rd day of March and expect all the colourful parades and expressiveness that you can almost take for granted on a great place.

Malaysia and the rest of Indonesia in March at this phase of the moons celestial orbit welcomes Eid al Fitr or the end of Ramadam where many streets are festooned in bright bunting and where the locals will be more than willing to offer you snacks as part of the celebrations, this is also observed in Singapore where I stayed recently in Little India.

There is also Mindanao island in the Philippines where the festival is also observed with all the fresh effervescence of the Pinoys.

Uruguay ushers in the Festival of Gaucho culture in Tacuarembó to the north of the country, this is the perfect excuse to experience everything associated with the River Plate, horses, wine, asados (barbecues) and gaucho based music.

Grape harvests are also celebrated in Argentina’s Mendoza region called the Vendimia Festival as well as Chile’s adjacent regions across the Andes. These Xanadu parts of the world host countless festivals where you can indulge the cousin cultures of gaucho and tango (they drank between dancing)

São Paulo is the largest city in South America around 21 million people and largely sidestepped but during March the restaurant week commences for 2 weeks where one must remember that most of mother earth descended upon during the 19th and 20th centuries. Italians, Portuguese, Africans, Japanese, Koreans, Germans, Spaniards all transported their cuisine to this corner of Brazil, indeed the city can be considered an Italian colony so expect fine food and culture to greet you.

This is considered the workshop of Brazil and the business centre but the city is as much a cultural powerhouse as Rio, it is indeed a sophisticated metropolis.
